    My first time posting here.

A few years back we acquired a Blakeslee U-20 mixer which has worked flawlessly up until recently. In the last few days, when we turn it on, it will run for about 1-2 minutes and then shut off/need to be reset. I am a bit mechanically inclined so any thought on what I could check causing the issue?

    Thank you in advance.

Has it had regular oil changes and presently full?

Does it do it in all gears? Or quicker in 3rd gear?

This make mixer has a worm gear on the motor shaft made of bronze. It may be worn or scarred up from lack of oil. First measure the amp draw of the machine. This will determine if it’s overload of a failing/overheating breaker. If in spec, look at wire connections to be clean and tight. Especially on the breaker. If over amp spec, Ohm the motor windings and check for short to ground.

Other than that you’ll have to go inside and look for bad bearings or other binding/load. Often a Motor bearing. On some you can remove the motor cooling fan cover and manually “feel” a binding or not. But not on a internally cooled fan. They often have a tapping on the motor shaft tail end that enables you to manually rotate the motor.

Make sure to check it in low gear as well so that you can feel the planetary. Sometimes I found the perimeter seal to be caked up with foreign material that binds.

Thank you for your reply. I’ll check each of these possible causes. Much appreciate it.

Check the mixer’s gearbox and moving parts for proper lubrication. If the gears or other moving components are dry or gummed up, they could create resistance that causes the motor to overheat and shut down. Worn or damaged bearings can also create mechanical resistance, causing the motor to draw more current and overheat. Listen for unusual noises when the mixer runs, which could indicate Insulated Bearing wear.

Thank you. We had to have a technician come in and determine that it needs a motor capacitor but we will definitely change the lubrication at this time as well.
