How to convert frymaster fpph455cse from natural gas to propane gas
Posted by guest on October 5, 2017 at 12:00 amRecently bought a used 4 well frymaster fryer and need to convert from natural gas to propane gas. It is a US model. What kind of conversion kit do I need? Just the basic one or do I need to get the $1000 kit that makes you change the burners as well.

A SIDE NOTE:
ALL fryers live a hard life at a constant 350°-400°…ALL day long and usually seven days a week…for YEARS. Things wear out or eventually succumb to the heat or abuse. So repairs most certainly were required before they were put up for sale and you bought them.
Frymaster makes some great fryers. They’re designed to withstand those stresses over the long haul. HOWEVER, Frymaster “high-efficiency” gas fryers (like the ones you purchased) are relatively complex when compared to others. Therefore, more things to go wrong. Furthermore, NONE of the replacement parts are cheap. ESPECIALLY if there’s a cracked vat…or if one (or both) IR burners for a vat has failed.
I (as a factory trained technician) would RARELY advise anyone to buy a USED Frymaster – UNLESS it was from a reputable used equipment dealership that offers a warranty.
OTHERWISE, the ONLY way I would even consider it is if I (or another qualified technician) had the opportunity to look it (or them) over really, REALLY well. That would include taking a few things apart for visual inspection – such as what’s necessary to peep into each fryvat’s burner chamber, etc. If all appeared well up to that point, then I’d INSIST that the fryer(s) be filled with oil, plugged in and connected to gas, then fired up for an intensive test run.
If all appeared good with all of THAT – THEN I might consider giving my nod of approval – contingent upon price, of course. I would also insist on some fair warranty period like, say…90 days from date of purchase.
So, I DO hope that when you bought those used fryers from a reputable used equipment dealership who offered you a fair warranty period in case of problems.

The kit you’re referring to looks like this:
Your model number FPPH455SE left the factory as a 4-bank fryer set having the FootPrint Pro oil filtration system. Each fryer uses a CM3.5 computer for temperature control. Not that this means anything regarding what gas it uses. It just means that since an oil filter system is crammed in there, things would be just a little more challenging for a technician to do the conversions. Not much – but some.
NOW, from my OWN factory training from nearly twenty years ago, I learned that Frymaster installs gas-specific infrared burners into their fryers leaving the factory. I think they still do this. The original factory burners are only good for the specific gas that the fryer set was set up for. So, a natural gas burner can’t be used for LP.
YET, if a technician orders replacement burners for some reason (i.e., to replace ones that have failed), Frymaster supplies UNIVERSAL burners. Those replacement burners CAN be used with either natural or LP gas.
I’m telling you this because there IS a way to tell if your burners have ever been replaced before. A factory-trained technician can look at it and know if that IS or IS NOT the case. You said you bought your fryer set USED. So if they HAVE been replaced sometime in the past, then you won’t need new burners for an LP conversion. Otherwise, if they are the ORIGINAL burners from the factory, then you WILL need the entire kit as pictured above.
OH…and that would be X 4.
YES – one kit per fryer. Since you have FOUR fryers, you’d need four kits.
If you’ve lucked out and find that you WON’T need new burners or insulation as pictured above. You WILL still need the orifices, ignitors and the gas valve conversion kit to be installed.
WHICHEVER is the case, DO NOT attempt this yourself or employ anyone else to do the conversion. A factory trained and authorized technician needs to do the conversion.
ANYWAY, so now you need a Frymaster factory authorized service company to send out a technician to assess your situation. Here’s link that provides you a list of them. It looks like there are eight companies in Florida for you to choose from:

Thanks for all the information. Based on this we decided to return the item as it was too involved to change all of those parts.
