    I have a customers Pitco Frialator SSH Series – Flame Up on Ignition, eventually it will trip the overtemp protection (Roll Out Switch), I have included a Youtube video link of the fault. It seems the cause will be the small silver gas SCB solenoid (Self Cleaning Burner). The solenoid seem to fail open or partly open at startup, causing an excess of unburnt gas to fill the SCB runner tube and on ignition there is a large flame around the burner area, its pretty scary if your not familiar with these types of faults…

    First you should carry out normal checks like;

    1. Check Gas Pressure (X.X kPA on nameplate) p14 in manual (link below)

    2. Remove the burner components and check for any blockages in the burner heat tubes or baffles (eg. soot, broken parts, or maybe a small albatross) that may be causing poor flow thru the burner tubes and making it backup into the front component area.

    3. I was able to contact Pitco Technical team and they helped me thru the process, suggesting possible blockage in the SCB system, leakages in the pilot flex tube assy, incorrect SCB orifice, possible electrical fault on the mainboard or relay failure, or the SCB solenoid maybe faulty.

    At this point after checking all or the above and without spare parts to replace control board etc I tried lightly tapping the SCB solenoid with a “technical spanner”, restarted the machine and its working fine now…but needs a new SCB solenoid – currently on order…

    Thanks Pitco for your help direct from USA while late at night here is Australia!

    PS: I will add a Youtube link if the Fryer working correctly, when I go back to replace the SCB solenoid.

    Hope this helps someone…GH

    Interesting. Just wondering if you checked the flue?

      Yep, I’ve just updated the text to reflect the whole process I went thru and the faulty SCB component. I didnt mention the flue duct specifically, but it was checked with many other things… and following the Pitco Service Manual has the Flue Duct listed in the checks but doesnt mention the SCB solenoid failure (or the SCB circuit faults in the Mainboard or relays)

      Knowing and understanding the Heating Sequence of the fryer and components operation enables you to diagnose equipment failure more accurately. The SG and SSH fryer components function in specific order of operation are described in the “SG/SSH Series Service Manual” page 7

    Having a gas valve leak in the open position is really dangerous. But for the flame to come out like in your video means that the burner isn’t lighting correctly. Like a lighting port (flame transport) to the pilot miss-aligned or plugged. Or perhaps a orifice in the carburetor not centered. Or perhaps the flame runner shields? Or, the SCB runner tube itself.

    Even with a self cleaning burner system there should not be roll out.

    You might find this manual a bit easier to use.
