Troubleshooting a CU50 & pump runs intermittently. Both cleaning & ice making cycles. Noisy during ice making cycle due to intermittent pump. Cubes have been full size, but not full. Long story short…pump is starting & stopping during entire ice making cycle due. Increased water usage is noted. Thanks for any help.

Being the model number is not the current format, I’m guessing that the machine in a older one with mechanical timing system. If not, let me know.

Intermittent motors are one of 2 things, Overload/thermal protection or loss of power.

With a thermo trip, it can be bearings, low voltage, armature misalignment, friction, or misapplication. Pull the pump and turn manually to be sure it is free, shaft doesn’t wiggle, and impeller has no interference.

Loss of power to the pump is easy to watch and prove with a voltmeter or even a volt tester across the two lines that feed the pump. easy at the back of the plug or the power board. A clamp on ampmeter in conjunction with voltage monitoring will tell you if there is a sudden open inside the motor. But alone will only tell you that the motor stopped or shorted. If you find a loss of power, look at the timer micro switches and wiring connectors.

Though I couldn’t find any manuals on this machine, I know it’s got to be a 15 inch undercounter. Some of then had a sump pump added. Is this the pump your saying starts and stops? If so, that is normal. They have a trap like sump that works with a pressure switch to start and stop the pump. If you can provide a gravity drain, the pump can be removed and drain plumbed.

Thanks for all comments. The Scotsman CU50 was purchased thru restaurant supply house in 2019 and is an undercounted residential with built in pump due to drain location.

I am suspecting the water solenoid valve due to noisy hum during harvest cycles. The circulation pump is kicking on & off during harvesting to assist the hot gas valve dropping the cubes. Well….. that’s what the service manual indicates is the sequence.

Gonna test the water solenoid valve per specs, and any other ideas & comments.

    Thanks ALL

If you have a water solenoid that is making a loud hum, it means the armature is not fully seating into the center of the coil. Also called chatter. You may have a broken spring or foreign material above the armature.
