I am currently an HVAC student at the West Chicago Professional Center, and I am set to graduate next month. As a student fresh out of school, what is the best way to get started in the field? My hope is to eventually someday work on commercial ammonia systems, if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to work ammonia systems, you’ll need to find a shop that does over 1000 ton commercial systems. I’m not familiar with the Chicago market, But join RSES as a student price while your still enrolled and your local chapter can help you. Any refrigeration supply house can put you in touch with them.

The first step is to gain a strong understanding of refrigeration. Without a solid grasp, it’s likely you’ll be turned away from opportunities. You might want to explore maintenance jobs at cold storage facilities. If getting directly into ammonia refrigeration proves difficult. Chicagoland has many HVAC positions that can help you build refrigeration skills. Becoming a commercial kitchen repair technician, focusing on cold equipment, can also enhance your expertise. Consider reaching out to Pipefitters Local 597. I think they offer apprenticeships that started around $50k. D&H also works with industrial refrigeration, so sending them your resume could be a good move.
