How to Switch a TurboChef Bullet from the Phoenix to HLUI
The new HLUI controllers make TurboChef equipment even easier to operate. It shouldn’t come as a surprise when customers are calling and asking you to switch out the old controller. Once you have the part ready to go, use the following guide to help you through how to switch a TurboChef Bullet from the Phoenix to HLUI controller.
The following steps are for the ENC-3066-1 kit. It fits on the TurboChef Bullet or ENCORE units.
Saving Menu Settings
Before switching out the controllers, you should save the unit’s menu to a USB so it can be uploaded onto the HLUI controller after installation.
- Step 1. Turn the oven to the OFF state or cool down screen.
- Step 2. Insert a blank USB into the port.
- Step 3. When prompted on the screen, press OK.
- Step 4. Select “Save Menu to USB.”
- Step 5. When prompted on the screen, press OK.
- Step 6. Once the save is completed, press CLOSE and remove the USB.
Removing the Phoenix Display
Once menu settings are saved, you can begin removing the display.
- Step 1. Power down the unit – Before beginning to switch out controllers, ensure power is completely disconnected from the unit by turning it off and unplugging it.
- Step 2. Take off covers – Using a Torx T-15 security bit, remove the top and side covers from the unit.
- Step 3. Disconnect connections – Disconnect the following i.o board connections:
- 20 pin, 22 pin and 24 pin Molex connectors
- Mag CT wire that loops through the donut by pulling apart the bullet connector
- Speaker connection from the display and speaker (This can be disposed of as it’s not needed for the HLUI)
- If applicable, disconnect the ethernet cable from the display which also won’t be used on the new display
- Step 4. Remove the housing – Take out the display housing by removing the 5 screws underneath the housing and 2 screws on either side of it. Then the housing should lift away from the unit.
- Step 5. Remove the power cable – Disconnect the 3 pin connection power cable from the display and i.o board. This cable won’t be used for the HLUI.
- Step 6. Remove the communication cable – Disconnect the 4 pin connection communication cable from the display and i.o board. This cable will be used for the HLUI controller.
- Step 7. Disconnect the light ring – Disconnect the grey RJ-11 cable running from the light ring to the display. This cable won’t be used for the HLUI.
- Step 8. Disconnect the USB cable – Disconnect the USB cable from the display.
- Step 9. Remove the board – Remove the i.o board from the mounting brackets.
- Step 10. Uninstall the brackets – Remove the i.o board mounting brackets from the back of the display. Save at least one of the nuts to use for installing the HLUI controller.
- Step 11. Separate the display from the trim – Remove the phoenix display from the trim bezzle and discard the old display.
Installing the HLUI Controller
Once the Phoenix display is removed, the HLUI controller part kit is unboxed and old components being reused are ready, we can install the new display.
- Step 1. Install HLUI into trim – Put the new HLUI display into the trim bezel. To secure it in place, reuse the screws from the phoenix display.
- Step 2. Install the standoffs – Put the 3 plastic, white standoffs into their corresponding holes.
- Step 3. Install the i.o board – Clip the i.o board onto the standoffs. Then use the nut saved from the phoenix display to secure the board to the stud in the bottom right of the i.o board.
- Step 4. Connect the power cable – Reconnect the three pin connector power cable to the i.o board and HLUI display.
- Step 5. Connect the communication cable – Reconnect the communication wire to the i.o board and display.
- Step 6. Connect the USB cable – Reconnect the USB cable to the HLUI display.
- Step 7. Connect the speaker cable – Install the new speaker cable to the display.
- Step 8. Reinstall the housing – Install the display housing by securing it with the 5 screws underneath and 2 on either side.
- Step 9. Reconnect remaining connections – Reconnect the following to the i.o board:
- 20 pin, 22 pin and 24 pin Molex connectors
- Mag CT wire through the donut
- Reconnect the speaker with the new cable
- Step 10. Reinstall the covers – Put the side and top covers back onto the unit.
- Step 11. Power on the unit – Once all connections are made and the unit is reassembled, it can be plugged in and turned on.
Final Set Up
After the HLUI controller has been installed, there’s a few final set up steps that need to be performed before your service call is finished.
- Step 1. Access service menu – Press the Gear icon on the screen when the unit is in the OFF state or cool down mode. Then enter the password 1801.
- Step 2. Enter the serial number – Select the data plate on the left of the screen. Then select the box next to “Serial Number.” Use the keypad to enter the unit serial number and press the blue enter key once completed.
- Note: The serial number can be found on the unit’s data plate at the back of the oven. The service menu can be exited once the serial number is entered.
- Step 3. Obtain HLUI menu files – For chain customers, the HLUI specific menu file needs to be obtained from their corporate or operations website. If the menu was saved to a USB from the phoenix display, the file can be sent to servicegroup@turbochef.com to be converted for an HLUI controller. Once the files are received, download them to a blank USB.
- Step 4. Insert the USB – While the unit is in the OFF state or cool down mode, put the USB with the HLUI menu files into the port.
- Step 5. Update the unit – When the display reads “Update is available,” select “Apply now.” The unit will update and restart on its own. Once the display reads “Update complete,” you can press “Dismiss.”
- Step 6. Return unit to operations – Remove the USB and the customer can begin normal operations on the unit again.
