Tjernlund Draft Inducer Installation
bytechtown
A Tjernlund draft inducer allows for proper airflow in restricted boilers, furnaces, stoves and chimneys. When installed properly, these draft inducers can provide significant assistance and safety to any space where needed. Below is a guide on how to install a Tjernlund draft inducer, along with many helpful tips to keep in mind.
This is a general installation guide for draft inducer models AD-1, CSA1, DJ-3, D-3, HD, I, IL and XL. Please be sure to follow any specific installation and set-up instructions for the model that is being installed.Â
Preparing for Installation
Before installing the draft inducer, be sure to follow any preparation instructions related to your specific model. These may include:
- Switch installation
- Thermocouple installation
- Thermopile installation
- Electrical wiring
- Gasket mounting (I, IL, XL models only)
Installation Instructions
- Step 1—Find an installation spot that’s located between the draft hood, diverter, barometric damper and chimney. The inducer should be installed as close to the chimney as possible, and 2-3 pipe diameters away from a directional change like tees and elbows to prevent turbulence.
- NOTE—The draft inducer can be installed on a vertical, horizontal or inclined vent pipe. If mounting the draft inducer to a horizontal pipe, make sure to mount it to the underside of the pipe to reduce the risk of overheating.
- Step 2—Once the location is selected, mark the spot where the inducer will be installed. Then cut a clot into the pipe.
- Step 3—Insert the inducer into the slot in the pipe. Be sure to place the inducer in a way that ensures that the motor shaft is level and horizontal. This will prevent excessive wear on the bearings.
- Step 4—Secure the inducer to the pipe by using bands or screws, depending on the model being installed.
- Step 5—Seal any open areas around the inducer with a high-temperature silicone (or similarly appropriate) sealant
- Step 6—Conduct all necessary tests and checks to make sure the unit is working safely and properly.
Installation Tips
- Don’t use bullhead tees to connect two pipes together. If tees are needed, connect them at 45 degree angles or less. If there’s a change in the pipe size, use a tapered reducer or increaser.
- Make sure there’s a 1 to 2-foot gap between the draft inducer and the stove to prevent damage to the inducer unit.
- Do not install a draft inducer on a condensing heating unit.
